Product Overview & Ratings
Self-Aligning Flange Sets are a quick-connect conveying pipe coupling built to replace standard bolted flange or clamp connections in pneumatic and mechanical conveying lines. A captured O-ring seal and metal-to-metal contact between stub end flanges keep the connection airtight, aligned, and electrically continuous, while a tool-free, T-handle latch design lets the joint go together or come apart without wrenches or gaskets to replace.
Diameters from 2" to 12", in 300 series stainless steel, carbon steel, or other alloys on request.
Three styles, depending on the application.
- LP (low pressure) is rated to ±15 PSIG
- MP (medium pressure) is rated to -15/+50 PSIG, using 150# slip-on flat-face plate flanges
- HP (high pressure) is rated to -15/+150 PSIG, using 150# lap joint flanges
All three designs are rated for operating temperatures from -20°F to 250°F.
Maintenance & Performance
A standard bolted joint depends on the installer getting alignment, torque, and gasket seating right every time, and that's often what fails first when a line is opened and closed repeatedly.
The self-aligning design keeps alignment and sealing built into the coupling itself, so every reconnection is consistent regardless of who makes it.
No. Instead of a flat gasket that has to be replaced each time a bolted joint is opened, the connection seals with a captured O-ring held between the stub end flanges. The V-band or lap joint hardware is reusable too, so there's no stock of gaskets and bolts to keep on hand for every disassembly.
As with any elastomer seal, the O-ring should be inspected during routine maintenance and replaced if it shows wear or damage.
Opening a standard flanged joint means breaking bolts, removing the old gasket, then realigning and re-torquing on reassembly. A self-aligning flange set opens and closes with a tool-free T-handle latch, and the coupling realigns itself as it goes back together.
That makes routine cleanouts, inspections, and product changeovers faster, and makes it practical to open the line as often as your process requires rather than putting off cleaning because the joints are difficult to service.
Moving dry bulk solids through a pipeline generates static charge, so conveying lines need a continuous electrical path from end to end. Gasketed joints can interrupt that path, which is why bolted lines often rely on separate bonding jumpers across each flange.
Self-Aligning Flange Sets make direct metal-to-metal contact between the stub end flanges, keeping the line electrically continuous through the joint itself and helping maintain grounding across the conveying line.
Your overall grounding and bonding approach should still be confirmed against your facility's requirements and any codes that apply to your material.
Applications & Support
In many cases, yes. With diameters from 2" to 12" in stainless steel, carbon steel, or other alloys, Self-Aligning Flange Sets can be specified to match existing conveying pipe, making them a practical upgrade at joints that are opened frequently for cleaning or inspection.
Share your line size, material of construction, and operating pressure, and Young Industries can confirm the right flange style for your existing system.
Anywhere a pneumatic conveying system or mechanical conveying line needs to come apart regularly for cleaning, inspection, or maintenance, and where a standard bolted or gasketed joint would be too slow or too failure-prone to service that often. That makes them a common fit across bulk solids handling applications with frequent cleanouts or product changeovers.
