Conveyor Questions

Conveyor Questions Our Engineers Hear Every Day

Choosing a Conveying Technology

Which conveyor is right for my material?

Start with how your material behaves, then look at how much you need to move and how far.

For fragile or friable materials where particle integrity matters, the Transvair Aero-Mechanical Conveyor and the Multi-Phase Dense Phase Transporter are designed to minimize degradation.

For compact powder conveying from bulk bags or silos, the Multi-Phase Product Pump handles up to 6,000 lbs/hr over 300 feet. For high-capacity bulk solids handling, the Dense Phase Transporter scales up to 150,000 lbs/hr over 1,000 feet.

For materials that tolerate faster conveying over shorter runs, the Transvair Venturi Eductor offers a simple, low-maintenance option with no moving parts.

Not sure where your material falls? Young Industries can test your material before you commit to a conveying method.

What conveying options does Young Industries offer?

Four conveying technologies, each suited to a different job.

The Transvair Aero-Mechanical Conveyor moves material mechanically on a rope-and-disc system for gentle, low-degradation transport.

The Multi-Phase Product Pump and Multi-Phase Dense Phase Transporter both use pneumatic pressure to push material through pipe, scaled differently: the Product Pump handles up to 6,000 lbs/hr over 300 feet, the Dense Phase Transporter scales up to 150,000 lbs/hr over 1,000 feet.

The Transvair Venturi Eductor uses compressed air and no moving parts for simpler, lower-maintenance conveying.

How do I know if I need dilute-phase or dense-phase pneumatic conveying?

It comes down to velocity and product sensitivity.

Dense-phase conveying, available on the Multi-Phase Dense Phase Transporter, moves material in slower-moving slugs at higher line pressure, which reduces degradation and pipe wear on abrasive or friable materials. It also reaches higher throughput (up to 150,000 lbs/hr) over longer distances (up to 1,000 feet) than the Product Pump or Venturi Eductor.

If your material tolerates faster, more dilute conveying and your run is shorter, the Venturi Eductor is often the simpler, lower-cost choice. For larger applications, Young Industries also engineers complete dilute phase pneumatic conveying systems designed around your material and plant layout.

How do I convey fragile or friable materials without degrading them?

Keep conveying velocity low and limit impact. Two Young Industries technologies are built for exactly that.

The Transvair Aero-Mechanical Conveyor carries material on a rope-and-disc system for gentle transport with minimal product degradation.

The Multi-Phase Dense Phase Transporter moves material in slower-moving slugs rather than suspending it in high-velocity air, which reduces particle breakage and fines.

Faster dilute-phase conveying is better suited to materials that can tolerate higher velocity. If you're unsure where your material falls, material testing is the most reliable way to find out.

Specification & Support

What information should I have ready before specifying a conveyor?

Material characteristics (particle size, bulk density, moisture sensitivity, abrasiveness, and how fragile or friable the material is), required throughput, and the distance and routing between pickup and discharge points. Those four factors are what separate a good fit between mechanical conveying, a Product Pump, a Dense Phase Transporter, and a Venturi Eductor.

Can Young Industries test my material to determine the best conveying method?

Yes. The Young Industries test lab evaluates your actual material, so conveying recommendations are based on how your product really behaves rather than assumptions from a data sheet.

Our engineers use those results, along with your required throughput, conveying distance, and routing, to recommend the right conveying technology for your application. Equipment rentals are also available if you'd like to trial equipment in your own facility.

Can conveyors integrate with other Young Industries equipment?

Yes. The Multi-Phase Product Pump and Dense Phase Transporter are both designed to work with bin vent filters, cyclone separators, receiving bins, diverter valves, and check valves as part of a complete pneumatic conveying system, and both can be lined with TransFlow® fluidizing media for cohesive products.

How do I get a quote or talk to an engineer about a conveying application?

Call Young Industries at (800) 546-3165 or schedule a consultation online to reach an engineer who can review your material data and recommend the right conveying technology for your bulk solids handling application.
