Mixer Questions

Mixer Questions Our Engineers Hear Every Day

What mixer options does Young offer and use cases?

Horizontal Ribbon Mixers (0.25 to 1500 ft3): fast, uniform batch blending of powders/granules with option for liquid additives; widely used in chemical, plastics, food, and pharma.

Twin-Shaft Continuous Mixers: continuous, high-throughput blending for powders, liquids, and pastes across petrochemical, chemical, ceramics, food, and waste treatment.

How do mixers ensure consistent blending and reduce operational cost?

Ribbon mixers use engineered agitator geometry and trough design (e.g., drop center for cleanout, outboard bearings) to promote uniform mixing with fewer stops. Proper sizing (HP, RPM, agitator type) improves energy use and cycle time. Continuous twin‑shaft mixers maintain steady‑state homogeneity with minimal batch handling, and when supplied with adjustable paddle agitators, allow the paddle angle to be tuned to achieve the desired result.

What industries use these mixers and for what materials?

Ribbon: chemicals, plastics, foods, pharmaceuticals; powders with occasional liquid additions.

Twin-Shaft: petrochemical/chemical slurries, foods, and pastes where continuous processing is preferred.

What maintenance & cleaning procedures are recommended? Are there IOM manuals?

Yes, Young provides IOMs for mixers. Typical tasks include lockout/tagout, access cover removal, product contact cleaning, and checks on seals, bearings, and reducers. Spec sheets and IOM references are included on each product page.

How do horizontal ribbon mixers differ from twin-shaft continuous mixers?

Ribbon (batch): For batch processing. Used when a more homogeneous blend is required. Can be used as a standalone unit without any ancillary equipment.

Twin-Shaft (continuous): For continuous processing. Designed for long steady runs without interruption. Requires additional equipment to feed ingredients at the desired rate.

Can mixers be customized (material type, output, sanitation)?

Yes. Young will tailor agitator design, HP/RPM, materials, finishes, and dimensions to application needs. Contact a Young Industries Applications Engineer to discuss your custom mixing needs.
