Receiving the Rotary Valve

Model LH Rotary Valve as it was received from the user
Rotary Valve as received

In 1990, Young Industries made several 20” Model LH Rotary Valves for handling abrasive corn-based powder. These valves were manufactured with heavy wall housings with interior bore hard surfaced with Stellite. In 2017 our Engineers were contacted by the user to discuss a change in the application for one of the 20” rotary valves. For this application the rotary valve would be required to comply with NFPA 69 standards. After the initial discussions with the user it was decided that one of the 20” Model LH Rotary Valves would be returned to Young Industries for an evaluation to determine if it could be refurbished and used for the application.

Evaluating the Rotary Valve

After the Rotary Valve was received had to be completely taken apart and evaluated to ensure everything was structurally sound and the dimensions where good. During evaluation it was discovered that many parts such as the rotor, seals, the bearing, etc… would need replacing. Other things such as the housing, valve bore, and end plates needed to be machined. After the evaluation it was determined that the Rotary Valve was able to be successfully refurbished and made comply with NFPA 69 regulations.

Final Cost Comparison

The rugged construction features of this rotary valve gave our customer 27 years of reliable service. The refurbished rotary valve will extend the life of the valve by many years. The users choice to refurbish the valve cost them 55% of the cost of a new rotary valve. This newly refurbished valve will last the user many years to come on top of the 27 years it has already served them.
